It is quite astounding to hear that because the Dixie Chicks won five Grammy's that they have been validated concerning their stance and comments made about George W. Bush and his policies in the Iraq War. Interesting, since the Grammy's are not something that the whole population votes on, it is hard for my brain to comprehend. Hell, the voters of the Grammy's are not voted on by the people who buy the music, but anyone within the music industry who has the necessary credits to apply to be a voting member. So statements as they have been made since the conclusion of those awards makes it a very insincere attempt to say that we poor misguided folk who chose not to buy the Dixie Chicks music or who have held them in distain were wrong. What arrogance.
The Dixie Chicks have every right to say what they wish and since they enjoy a stage that is paid for by those folk that support their point of view and music, they should continue to espouse that point of view and play their music. As for me I will continue not to buy their music. What I have heard of their music sounds like they have some sort of talent. Of course, any one that has more talent at playing an instrument or singing than I, is indeed talented, but I will not validate their music or their point of view and buy their CD. That doesn't mean that because of my refusal to buy their music they will immediately go broke. Far from it. They will earn their money for the music they make and the point of view they espouse.
What it comes down too is character. It is easy to show a brave face when you have all your show biz friends backing you and make statements on foreign soil that insults our nation. It is easy to carry that burden where there is not one to carry. When it is all said and done and their career in music has faded they can look upon those hollow statues they call Grammy's and realize that their character is just as empty as those statues. It reminds me so much of another celebrity that is held in high (dis)regard by our nation for her opposition to the Vietnam War. Even today, though she has even made silly attempts at an apology for her traitorous actions in North Vietnam and has even earned great accolades from the movie profession and won an Oscar or two it does not give back to her the integrity she lost for what she did to our nation. The Dixie Chicks and her both will learn the hard way that integrity is like virginity, once you lose it, you never get it back.
